You can’t be good at everything… AND you don’t want to be. Here’s why…

It’s that time of year when all entrepreneurs gotta pull up their big kid underwares and get their full-fledged adulting on. You know that time of year when taxes come around, and you left your books sitting there to collect dust the whole year.

Honestly, I have never been good at this. My love & Adventure Partner Brian has for the most part been very good at keeping an eye on what comes in, and what goes out. The guy makes a spreadsheet, and everything. It’s impressive. Not in 2018 though.

This past year was kind of nuts. We did a LOT of stretching & growing in ourselves, as a couple, but mostly in our biz. There was no time for balancing the books, which I swear is the most adulting thing we do… Damn taxes…

Entrepreneurs are a different breed…

It’s hard to drag your butt to do something that you don’t love. You know we are a different breed! We are nuts in the eyes of our peers, but I don’t have to tell you that. You already know that… Especially if you have already committed to this lifestyle, or you are thinking about it.

Remember when you told your friends, co-workers, or even your family that you were going to take the plunge into being an entrepreneur, and they looked at you cross-eyed. Ya, they think we are mental patients because it is hard for most people to wrap their heads around the risk of being self-employed. They think things like:

What do you mean you aren’t making money yet?
Isn’t it scary to not have a paycheck coming in every other week?
Sounds like a lot of work, I could never do that…

And they are right, they probably couldn’t because they don’t believe in themselves like we do! That’s why we are different because most wouldn’t dare to walk a day in our shoes. Like our good friend & mentor Alex Charfen says:

“WE are the evolutionary hunters, clearly the most important people in the world, because entrepreneurs are the only source of consistent, positive human evolution, and we always will BE!” – Alex Charfen

WEW, that just gave me chills, and it does every time, because it resonates so deeply… Did you just feel that? Let us know in the comments below if you jive with the idea of being an evolutionary hunter.

No one becomes an entrepreneur just cuz they feel like it…

Sure most entrepreneurs start because they want to make an independent living, and not clock in. BUT there is also this underlying obsession with making the world a better place in some way.

You have a skill, a passion, or something you have an urge to share with the world. That’s why you dove in head first, or you are seriously thinking about it! Entrepreneurs rarely think about adulting, taxes, or the challenges that may arise before they start their businesses. That’s what makes us unique because we are more likely to just go for it, and figure it out as we go. Right?!

Then why do we avoid being mature when it comes up…

If it’s not your thang, then it’s not your thang.

I will never understand why people expect other people to remember silly things. For instance, if you were to ask me the name of that actor who stared in that movie… I likely wouldn’t remember cuz I DON’T CARE! Then you get that person who says “well you should know that actor because you are a Canadian.” No I shouldn’t because my brain is smart enough to filter out the bullshit that it doesn’t care to learn. AND so is yours.

So when things come up that you think you “should” know… Cut yourself some slack. If you aren’t interested in it, you are less likely to want to do it, know it or learn it. Let alone remember how to do it when it comes up once a year. (Like taxes…)

BUT what if we looked at adulting as actually BEing empowering…

I never thought I would say it, but this year I am actually interested in changing my mind about taxes. I won’t change my mind about that Canadian actor though… Just saying I don’t have space for that crap, no matter how Canadian I am.

I do however have an interest, alongside my sweet Brian to get more savvy with the books. You see… MONEY is flowing in. Which is exciting. Naturally I am intrigued to learn more about our net worth, and how paying affiliates & contractors works. Because all thriving businesses surround themselves with a team of people all contributing to the BIG goal. (Like helping people & making the world a better place!) Trust me, you want to pay people so you can release yourself as a cog in your biz, and BE the owner! (Or owners if you are working with your love.)

Isn’t that exciting?! Now the big question is… Why wouldn’t you want to learn a few things about adulting?

You gotta care about it… Even just a little bit…

While neither Brian or myself were totally thrilled about it, it was time to start collecting things for taxes, and reconcile the books. Whatever that means…. Just kidding. Suddenly there has been a bit of a buzz in the air because we are seeing our BEAP baby mature, and shapeshift into a real viable business. Pretty neat huh?!

When you are invested in something so deeply, it is so worth it to learn the ins & outs of all its aspects, even if you don’t love it. For us, we want to learn the language of our finances, so when we do pass off our bookkeeping to a pro, or work more intimately with a financial advisor we are educated enough to understand what is going on. PLUS we will be better at making decisions with our money the more we know.

Make being a full-fledged adult fun…

Don’t take shit so seriously! If you are about to embark on something you don’t love, or aren’t great at… Take a new perspective. Laugh at yourself for how much you dislike it, or the silly mistakes that you are making. THEN pull up your socks, and find someone who is good at it. There are videos, and endless trainers on the internet who are pouring their hearts into topics that they love! Just like you are! Invest in other entrepreneurs trainings, and eCourses that will make you better! Know it in your soul that when you can afford to pass it off, and hire someone to do that thing that you don’t love, you will! BUT for now… Just have fun with it, and learn as much as you can about it! 

It’s a lot easier to do this adulting thing with others who are adulting too…

We are happy to show you some secrets that we have learned along our entrepreneurial journey… These are the kind of things we can only share in the BEAP Tribe For Entrepreneurs because we have invested so much of our time & money into learning them ourselves. But we don’t have to tell you that because you’re an entrepreneur, and you know that your time & efforts are valuable. (And you should get paid for all that you do! Right?! RIGHT!)
